How old is your child?

Have you started yet?

Look at You!

Such a Proactive Parent

You are awesome. You're planning ahead and making sure you are ready to support your child in this milestone. Great job.

Something to keep in mind:

Most children are not developmentally capable to start potty training until around 24 months. Their nervous system needs to develop its communication skills between their brain, bladder, and bowels. And even just being physically able to take off their clothing in the bathroom can be a hindrance to starting too early.

However, if your child is showing signs of readiness, you will want to get started.

So, what is driving you to start potty training?

Alright. Let's Get Ready

We have a few questions that will make it easier for us to help you.

Is your child showing interest

Do you have a deadline for getting out of diapers?

Are you feeling excited about potty training?

Are you feeling anxious about it?

Have you started yet?

Yeah, that's common

It is very normal for progress to be slow or children to resist potty training under 24 months. Know that most children are not developmentally capable of training until at least 24 months. Their nervous system needs to develop its communication skills between their brain, bladder, and bowels.

However, if your child is showing signs of readiness, it is good you are getting started! Just know that children who start before 24 months usually take longer to master the potty. That’s not a bad thing if they are really ready to get after it.

We have a short fundamentals video that goes through the whole process and gives tips for moving things along. It's part of our free Pooping on the Potty Online Academy, which also comes with access to our full library of videos and articles aimed at helping parents master potty training.

Or, if you'd like to have direct access to Nurse Julia through this process, we have different support options for that as well.

How's it going?

Awesome! Your child is ready.

Let's get you ready.

This means it's probably time to start! You will want to familiarize yourself with a few different approaches you can try, and will also want to make sure you have what you need to set your child up for success.

We Understand

It’s completely normal and fair for parents to be overwhelmed with potty training. Before 24 months, most children do not have the developmental capabilities of potty training. Not to mention, they may have a harder time grasping the concept of potty training in general. However, if your child is showing signs of readiness, it is good you are getting started! Just know that children who started before 24 months usually take longer to master the potty, so it may cause you to feel overwhelmed. Having an action plan can take a huge weight off your chest.

We're Super-Anti-Potty-Pressure

Is Karen down the street blabbing about her completely potty-trained 22 month old? Is your mother-in-law saying you're already way behind? Ignore them. You know your child best, and with the right preparation, you will know when it’s time to start.

If you want to get ready before then, we have everything you need to know right here in our Academy.

Well Sh*t!

You're having Poop Issues

Welcome to the club. Poop issues are the most common problem for kids @age months. You’re not alone. Let's get into the details ;).

Where are they pooping right now?

Great job getting started.

Once your child is @age, potty training can get a little more difficult. we’re here for you, we hear you, and we’re going to offer you a solution.

Tell us what you're struggling with:

You're Having Pee Issues

Yup. Pee issues are a normal problem for kids @age months. You’re not alone.

Where are they going right now?

This again?

It's so frustrating when you think you're past it, then they start not being potty trained again.

In what way are they regressing?

So, You Must Be Exhausted

Waking up in the middle of the night to change the sheets on a bed can be super annoying.

However, it's important to maintain your chill and be calm... even when you're tired.

Are they sleeping in a crib?

Are they daytime potty trained?

Most cribs aren't designed for nighttime potty use

If you are ready for nighttime potty training it is best to have your child in a bed that allows them to access the potty in the middle of the night.

Before you start nighttime training, switch them to a toddler/child-sized bed or maneuver your crib to allow for the child to get out easily.

This can even be a mattress on the floor. No shame, we will not report you to Crate&Barrel.

Are they daytime potty trained?

Tell us when they're having the accidents

It's OK. This Too Shall Pass

Nighttime is one of the harder potty training problems because it's likely you're not fully awake when you're dealing with it. Just like your child.

Here are some steps you can take to smooth out the nighttime potty training:

  • Option 1: Get our Academy article on Nighttime Potty Training.
  • Option 2: Get access to our complete potty training guide as well as e-mail support with Nurse Julia as needed.
  • Option 3: Have a one-on-one consultation with Nurse Julia to create a customized plan, as well as access to her with any questions or issues that arise while your little one is potty training.

Let's get this sorted out and back on track

It is normal for children to slightly regress, especially when something in their environment has changed.

Think about if anything has changed for your child, such as birth of a new baby, started preschool, things at home are more stressful.

Often, spending a little more quality time with your child can resolve @regression. If the issue persists, we recommend meeting with Nurse Julia to brainstorm ways to get your child back on track.

Getting help for Regression:

Let's make sure we have the fundamentals sorted out

We have a short fundamentals video that goes through the whole process and gives tips for moving things along. It's part of our free Pooping on the Potty Online Academy, which also comes with access to our full library of videos and articles aimed at helping parents master potty training.

Let's take care of daytime first

If you haven't yet gotten your child daytime potty training, and you're finding yourself struggling with nighttime, we highly recommend doing daytime potty training first.

Once that's handled and your child is capable of all of the steps of using the potty during the day, sorting out nighttime issues will be much easier.

Withholding :(

That is really common, but it can also be really concerning.

NOTE:

Constipation can be a medical problem. it can also be a response to something in the child’s environment. Your doctor is the best person to help with any medical concerns regarding bowel movements.

However, there are ways that we, as parents, that can help diminish fears and anxieties around pooping.

We recommend talking to your child’s pediatrician about helping them get on a good bowel movement regimen.

But in the meantime, you may want to schedule a 1-on-1 consultation with Nurse Julia for parenting support.

How does your child react when this happens?

Indifference is so hard

This is really frustrating.

Some kids will sit in their own @struggle and not even care. Filthy bastards. It’s really tough for us parents to even understand.

Ok. In reality, this is often a control issue, or it may also stem from some anxiety.

We recommend a 1-on-1 consultation with Nurse Julia. And a large glass of wine.

Alternatively, never hesitate to reach out to your pediatrician if you have concerns about behavioral issues.

We recommend getting help

Talking to your pediatrician is always a good idea, especially if you're feeling like this could be a medical issue.

However, it may be helpful to talk with Nurse Julia in a 1-on-1 session for overall parenting support and talking through issues.

Or you can get a custom plan developed by Nurse Julia. She'll read through your quiz results, send over some follow-up questions, and devise a plan, just for you.

Either option can help ease the hurdles and smooth out the wrinkles for you and your child.

Ok. That's actually helpful.

When a child understands their behavior, and they're responding with something other than indifference, that often means we can help them more easily.
